Photo by @beverlyjoubert | It’s a tough time of year in Botswana before the summer rains begin. Food is more limited - especially green, fresh, nutrient-filled vegetation. Elephants are lucky enough to have a very varied diet and spend the winter months eating more bark and woody vegetation. After a long winter, the reduced levels of nutrients can begin to take a toll on their condition - particularly in younger animals. The elephants will soon feast on green grass when the rains come, but right now they’re actively digging for rhizomes and bulbs to supplement their woody meals.
