Alexander Graham Bell wanted National Geographic to bring “the world and all that is in it” to ordinary people. The first woman to help with this mission was an independent-minded American woman named Eliza Scidmore. Born in 1856, she spent her life writing and photographing what was then known as the “far east.” Circa 1900, Scidmore captured her true passions in life – cherry blossoms and Japanese culture – in this beautiful portrait of 3 women. More than a century later, American landscape photographers Diane Cook and Len Jenshel also captured the beauty of hanami, the ritual viewing of cherry blossoms in the spring. The Japan they witnessed was a far cry from Scidmore’s. They observed a bustling high-tech life, although did not have to go far to find the symbols of Japan’s ancient culture.
