Photo by @katieorlinsky | Fall time along the Alatna River in Gates of the Arctic National Park, Alaska. The Alatna River flows for roughly 184 river miles through the Brooks Range until it joins the Koyukuk River near the native village of Allakaket. It is known as one of the most beautiful rivers in the United States- which I can most certainly verify after spending the last few weeks backpacking, pack-rafting and photographing along 47 miles of the river. It was an incredible adventure, and an eye-opening look at some fascinating new ecological impacts that are transforming the landscape (that’s all I can say about it now, but stay tuned for the upcoming article!).
