It might’ve seemed like the patriarchy was winning this weekend but some good news: Jenny Saville is officially the most expensive female artist in the world, after a painting of hers sold for £9.5 million at auction.
Talking to Dazed about painting women through a female gaze in 1994, Saville said: “Usually women are seductive, they’re there to be looked at, especially by a male viewer, usually painted by a male. In history there has just been a predominance of women being idealised and made into a fantasy of what women were. We’ll never know if that is the way that women were or not.
