Photos by @Joel Sartore and Carl Akeley | With his project the National Geographic Photo Ark, Joel Sartore is using the power of photography to inspire people to help save species at risk before it’s too late. With this adorable portrait of a Malayan tapir born six days earlier at the Minnesota Zoo, Sartore highlights the fact that there are less than 2500 of them left in existence, and hopefully inspires people into action. In contrast, Carl Akeley, born a century earlier, spent much of his life hunting rare creatures. Towards the end of Akeley’s life, he ultimately converted into an outspoken conservationist, and helped to establish the first wildlife sanctuary in Africa in 1925. Two photographers separated not only by a century, but also by philosophies, in the end embraced the same goal: protect wildlife.
