Photo by @simonnorfolkstudio | In 2001 I embarked on a major project investigating the relationship between war and landscape. My journey began in Afghanistan. Within this image the balloon seller stands in front of a former teahouse in a Kabul park next to the 'Afghan Exhibition of Economic and Social Achievements'. Balloons were illegal under the Taliban, but now itinerant balloon-sellers are common on the streets of Kabul, providing inexpensive treats for children. Shot at dusk, the balloons shine in the colourless, ruined landscape giving a surreal sense of displacement and hope.
