Vice Admiral James Stockdale was the highest ranking Navy officer held as a POW during the Vietnam War. He lead the first U.S. bombing mission during the war, and had at that point flown over 200 combat missions over three deployments. After his plane was shot down over North Vietnam, Stockdale was captured and held in a POW camp for over seven years. As the highest ranking officer at the camp, he was a leader among the other prisoners, and organized resistance efforts that earned him additional beatings, torture, and solitary confinement.
