フィラデルフィア美術館のインスタグラム(philamuseum) - 9月13日 08時19分

Happy Muharram! This first month of the Islamic lunar calendar emphasizes reflection, remembrance, and gratitude amongst Muslims worldwide. To celebrate the start of the new year, we are unveiling a Qur’an newly acquired by the South Asian Art department.

This Qur’an, written in a variant of the Indo-Arabic script known as Bihari, is intact with over five hundred folios, thirty of which have a fascinating array of marginal illuminations. It was made in and for one of the Muslim kingdoms that ruled parts of north-central India prior to Mughal dominance. This Qur’an demonstrates one of the earliest manifestations of Islamic art in India. Furthermore, its varied illuminations show ties with Central Asia, Iran, and even China. Stay tuned for updates on when it will go on display.
