The FBI has found a stolen pair of Ruby Slippers! The single sequin shown here was the only clue left behind when “The Wizard of Oz” heels were snatched from the Judy Garland Museum in Minnesota in 2005. And now they’re found! Our conservators were thrilled to help by examining the recovered shoes to confirm they’re consistent with the sparkling shoes that have been in our collection since 1979.
We’re the experts on Dorothy’s footwear thanks to over 200 hours spent studying and conserving our Ruby Slippers in preparation for their return to display on October 19, 2018. The conservation treatment—which included cleaning each sequin and realigning many to expose the shiny side—was supported by over 6,000 Kickstarter backers and prepared us with the deep knowledge to be able to help the FBI learn as much as possible about the recovered pair.
But there’s more. The recovered pair and the museum’s pair are long-lost twins—mismatched many years ago! Learn more about our examination of the Ruby Slippers and their temporary reunion on our blog: s.si.edu/RecoveredRubies (Link in profile.) #RubySlippers #WizardOfOz #ClassicHollywood #VintageHollywood #FashionHistory #AmericanCulture #EntertainmentHistory
