Photos by @MichaelGeorge // One of the Azores Islands in Portugal is Pico, iconic because of the volcano looming in the center. This is where Augusto Silva, the oldest winemaker in the region, lives on his vineyard. If you zoom in on the 1st landscape image, you can see a labyrinth of walls built from lava rock stretching out into the distance. Augusto and his team have gathered more fertile soil (from land further from the sea) and brought it to this small plot of land. The walls protect the grapes from the salt spray that whips in from the Atlantic, only a couple hundred yards away. Augusto is now 80, and has been farming in the region for 50 years.
