Years ago (1987!) shortly after I moved back to Japan, I became close friends with a wonderful and fabulous man — nicknamed DJ — who tragically died far too young of bone cancer. Somehow I “inherited” one of his belongings, an old koto that was more a room ornament than instrument but held a special place in my heart.

It has moved with me through 4 apartments, 2 countries, 4 cities, 2 houses, more boyfriends than I’d care to admit, a marriage, child, and divorce. It almost didn’t make the last move — I literally had it next to the garbage cans, but my son and his friend saved it, saying it was “cool.” So it sits next to my mother’s piano where I practice and occasionally compose.

Last night I brought @asuka_koto to the house and she let out a squeal of surprise seeing my/DJ’s koto. I suddenly realized how much I love this thing. In a bit, Asuka will be practicing her koto, and my koto will be fortified with the sound, the beauty, perhaps a residue of the frequency will bring her some joy.
