August, 1964. Brighton Beach was a regular Bank Holiday postcard picture of tourists enjoying the sun and the sea. Everything was pretty normal for the seaside town, except for a big group of Rockers- motorcycle enthusiasts in their 20’s and 30’s. Decked in leathers and patched jackets. Waiting. ⠀ To the surprise of everyone expect the Rockers, pebbles from the beach began flying at peoples heads. It wasn’t long before people realised that another subculture had arrived, and they were here to fight. The Mods- a younger group of well dressed teenagers stormed the beach and began attacking the Rockers. Rocks, deck chairs, chains and knives were used against the opposing group, and tourists fled the beach. ⠀ Whilst it wasn’t the first clash between the gangs, who had met in similar violence in Margate, Clacton and Hastings. But the events on that day in Brighton are now an iconic scene well known by many subculture enthusiasts, thanks to its immortalisation in the film Quadrophenia. The newspapers of the time certainly helped to cement this day in legend, as they are wholeheartedly to blame for causing moral panic and fear of youth culture. One example being the above front page from the Evening Argus. The subcultures were perpetually blamed for everything from teenage pregnancy to use of methamphetamines. ⠀ So- whatever your interpretation is on the events of that day, enjoy your Bank Holiday Monday. Try not to get into too much trouble. ⠀ #modsvsrockers #brightonbeach
