48 years ago Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground played their last ever show, before splitting until the 90's. Six years before Punk even began here in the UK, this band played their last gig. Lou Reed spent the following two years working as a typist for his father. The band were instrumental in the fusion of art and music; in kick starting a wave of experimental and avant garde sound. Regardless of the fact that their music wasn't popular at the time, you'd be stuck to find an alternative band who wasn't inspired by their work. In the words of Brian Eno: “I was talking to Lou Reed the other day, and he said that the first Velvet Underground record sold only 30,000 copies in its first five years. Yet, that was an enormously important record for so many people. I think everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band!" #velvetunderground
