When the gene that causes cystic fibrosis (CFTR) was discovered in 1989, scientists were optimistic that a cure was on the horizon. As years passed, hundreds of mutations were identified in the gene, but new treatments were slow to emerge, partly because scientists had trouble figuring out precisely where the gene is active. A multidisciplinary research team at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) & @HarvardMed cataloged all the different cells in the airway, & the paths they take to become those cells. In the process, they discovered a completely new type of cell called a pulmonary ionocyte (pictured in pink). When the CFTR gene is active, it is usually in this new cell, which makes up just 1-2% of the airway. The team shared their discovery in @Nature.Research.
