Continuous flow manufacturing is changing the way drugs are made, allowing chemists more creativity and flexibility. The technique flows small amounts of chemical ingredients through a streamlined process that operates without disruption, all the way from raw ingredient to tablet. The miniaturized technology opens up a realm of possible chemical combinations, which were prohibited because the chemical reactions required to make them were too volatile, wasteful, toxic or slow. With the continuous flow technique, potentially explosive reactions can be performed safely, as the amount of reaction material is small and can be monitored and controlled. This way chemists can be more creative with choices of reagents and reaction conditions. This technology, made possible by engineers and scientists at the Novartis-MIT (@MITpics) Center for Continuous Manufacturing (an alliance formed a decade ago) has the potential to reduce drug manufacturing time and manufacturing costs.
