Dans cet autoportrait aux besicles, le peintre se représente coiffé d’un bonnet de nuit et vêtu d’une robe de chambre. La tête penchée, détournant le regard de son objet, ses yeux bruns et profonds scrutent par-dessus ses besicles… ?
Célèbre pour ses peintures à l'huile de scènes de genre et de nature morte, l’artiste dut y renoncer à partir de 1770 : les pigments à base de plomb et leur liant nocif avaient peu à peu brûlé ses yeux. Ne renonçant pas à l'art pour autant, celui-ci se consacra alors au pastel. Durant ses dernières années, il multiplia portraits et autoportraits. Cet usage tardif du pastel le contraint à réinventer une façon de dessiner colorée et picturale, aux multiples hachures et nuances, contrastant avec la manière lisse de la tradition académique. Cet autoportrait aux besicles, qui fit sensation au Salon de 1771, est une admirable symphonie de couleurs ! ?

In this Self-portrait with Spectacles, the painter represents himself with a night cap and a robe. The head bent, looking away from his work, his brown and deep eyes are scanning over his spectacles… ?
Famous for his oil paintings, especially genre scenes and still lifes, Chardin was forced to abandon this technique from 1770 : lead-based pigments had progressively burned the artist' eyes. Not giving up the art, the artist focused on a new medium : pastel. In his last years, he multiplied self-portraits and relatives portraits. Coming to pastels late in life, Chardin was obliged to reinvent a pictorial method of drawing in color, with hatching and touches of various shades, contrasting with the smooth and flawless manner favored by academic tradition. This Self-portrait with Spectacles, which caused a sensation at the 1771 Salon, is an admirable symphony of colors! ?
