Joined @dbsbank leaders and staff, past and present, and many other guests at a special musical celebrating 50 years of DBS last night at the Capitol Theatre.
The DBS brand is synonymous with Singapore and the nation’s growth. DBS was formed in 1968, at a very uncertain time in our history. Singapore was not long separated from Malaysia, and the British had just decided to withdraw their troops three years ahead of schedule. Our then-Finance Minister, Dr Goh Keng Swee, established DBS to support our industrialisation programme, maintain confidence and show that Singapore was open for business.

DBS played a crucial role in our early industrialisation years. The bank provided companies financing on attractive terms and convinced MNCs to set up facilities here. One MNC that DBS helped to attract was German camera maker Rollei. Rollei created a cadre of highly skilled workers in precision machining and manufacturing. In the years since, DBS has helped to make Singapore an international financial centre and established a presence in 18 markets.
