The World at Night project
The sound of waves crashing to the coastal cliffs was the music of this surreal night in Victoria, Australia, along the Great Ocean Road. The setting moon was softly shining on the rock. I was looking south where bright star Achernar and the Magellanic Clouds were hanging over the vast Southern Ocean. The two clouds, icons of the southern sky, are our neighboring satellite galaxies of the Milky Way, visible to the naked eyes as you see them in this photograph, when you are away from light pollution. Watching them, you're looking at light that belongs to about 200,000 years ago, well before early humans reached Australia.
