#SeattleArtFair: This intricate late-eighteenth-century engraved map of the moon by the astronomer Jean-Dominique Cassini IV features in "Out of This World: Artists Explore Space," curated by Larry Gagosian for the Seattle Art Fair.

This map is based on one of roughly sixty drawings of the Moon made between 1671 and 1679. The detail of the map caused a scientific and societal sensation. Historically, the Moon had been considered symbolic of the purity and chastity of the Virgin Mary. Catholic astronomers, in particular, had worked to maintain the viewpoint that the Moon was a smooth, unblemished expanse of white.
