@zhijunwang Chinese, born 1982 Zhijun Wang, a rebellious youth growing up in a Hutong (a typical traditional residence) in Beijing, is fascinated by Chinese traditional culture and collecting sneaker. He started to learn drawing at the age of nine and since then, he fell in love with creating art projects. In 2008, determined to pursue his childhood dream, he quit his job and started learning traditional crafts. After few years of making customize sneakers, he started to think about the whole sneaker production cycle. At the same time, in 2014, Beijing was first engulfed in heavy smog in winter due to the mass industrialization. However, people have not noticed the environment change, especially the youth who often play outdoors on the streets. Zhijun Wang often night jogging in Beijing, so he started to conceive of making himself a mask out of sneaker in his collection combining both aesthetics and utility. The mask started off aiming at gaining attention, and at the same time, raising awareness about the negative consequences that smog brought about. Through his untiring quest for improvement in the past four years, he has handmade approxi- mately 100 sneaker masks and the material for every single one is from the same pair of sneaker. He has consecutively worked with adidas, adidas Originals, Nike, Puma, Reebok, MCM, Kidrobot, and CLOT to maximize the highlights of sneaker through the presentation of masks. About Maskology Along with the effects of mass industrialization continue to compound, air pollution is having a greater impact around the world. So People began to explore a new technology to faced the new challenge, it’s called Maskology. By repurposing expensive sneakers like the Yeezy, Off-White, Hu NMD etc. Zhijun Wang provides a practical barrier against toxic air. The Maskology has been stimulated many scholars to explore new fields, to make human life more colorful. From September 1 to September 16, 2018, Hidari Zingaro is pleased to announce “MASKOLOGY”, a solo exhibition by Zhijun Wang.
