Toray teammates!
.
The Japanese word “ganbarou” is another form of the word “ganbaru”, and it translates to “let’s do our best" or “let’s fight together”.
When I played in Japan two years ago, we would often say ganbarou to each other during matches or training. We don’t have a word with equivalent intention and meaning in the English language. I thought it was so powerful and that it perfectly represented a part of the Japanese culture that I loved.
Even though we are on opposite sides of the net this time, competing for our own USA & Japanese national teams respectively, we still ganbarou!
We are playing against but with each other. We do our best together. We fight together. And we all get better together and grow from it.
That’s what sports are all about. And there’s nothing else like it.
