National Geographic Travelさんのインスタグラム写真 - (National Geographic TravelInstagram)「Photos by @FransLanting When wildebeest are pouring into Kenya’s Maasai Mara at this time of year as part of their endless migration around the larger Serengeti grassland ecosystem, they have to get across the Mara River. There are only a few spots where they can safely cross and that is where large numbers of wildebeest congregate. It also draws lots of people keen to watch this epic wildlife spectacle, as shown in the second photo. At one crossing spot I counted more than 150 vehicles and not all of them were positioned in a way that had the best interest of the wildebeest in mind. Drivers keen to please their clients sometimes get in the way of the wildebeest, which then adds to their stress and indirectly, may even lead to mortality. It’s an unfortunate example of tourism impacting wildlife. A better balance has to be established between the needs of wildebeest and the interests of visitors, but that requires restraint and enforcement, and the Maasai Mara will need more rangers and better regulations to accomplish that.
