‘Francisco de Zurbarán cultivated a variety of genres over the course of his career, including still life, portraiture and history painting, but the majority of his works were religious.’

Cristian Albu (@cristiandanielalbu), our Post-War and Contemporary Art specialist in London, introduces this Zurbarán painting – a highlight of our Sacred Noise exhibition, on view at our King Street gallery until 20 July.

‘One of his religious subjects was Christ on the cross, which he depicted at least a dozen times with numerous variants between 1627 – when he crafted “Christ Crucified”, his masterpiece at the Art Institute of Chicago – and his work from 1655, which is currently on display, “Christ on the Cross, with the Virgin and Saints Mary Magdalene and John the Evangelist”.’
