The lake is an important spawning ground for salmon, and the region is famous for the journey salmon take to get there. As salmon migrate along the Brooks River on their way to Brooks Lake and nearby Naknek Lake, they must leap through a picturesque 6-foot waterfall, and every summer like clockwork numerous grizzly bears are there to catch their fall. I was in the region following a two-week expedition in the backcountry of Katmai National Park with a group of archeologists, botanists, park rangers and photographers retracing the footsteps of the original 1915 National Geographic Society expedition led by Robert F. Griggs, through what later became the park.
