Its ancient buildings are scattered through a date palm oasis, which is watered with a traditional Omani irrigation system. We arrived here at sunset after a long, hot drive from Muscat, the capital of Oman and stayed at Misfah Old House, a family-run hostel in the heart of the village that is only accessible by foot, along a network of cobbled alleyways. In the shade, cooled by the running water, we relaxed as if we’d just arrived home.
