Joni Mitchell was born on November 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Canada. Rolling Stone called her "one of the greatest songwriters ever", and AllMusic has stated, "When the dust settles, Joni Mitchell may stand as the most important and influential female recording artist of the late 20th century". Drawing from folk, pop, rock, and jazz, Mitchell's songs often reflect social and environmental ideals as well as her feelings about romance, confusion, disillusionment, and joy. Childhood polio damaged her left hand, a handicap that would later inspire her to use the open guitar tunings that became her trademark. At the beginning of her career, Mitchell's compositions were highly original and personal in their lyrical imagery. She moved to the United States in the mid-1960s, and in 1968, she recorded her first album, Joni Mitchell. Mitchell's style was emerging, and it was unique. Pensive and lilting, her songs offered a bit of philosophy, and were unafraid of positing points of personal romance. She moved to Los Angeles, becoming a key component of the Laurel Canyon scene of singer-songwriters. She helped create the leafy sound of the early 1970s California. Mitchell has produced or co-produced each of her albums since her debut and has maintained control of her master recordings and her publishing from the beginning of her career. An accomplished painter and photographer, she created the art for each of her album covers, and her artwork has been exhibited throughout the world. At her best, Mitchell was one of the finest and most adventurous artists of her generation, and a key inspiration to many women in music as a talent who refused to be hemmed in by boundaries of genre or gender. In 2007 she quit touring and released her 17th, and reportedly last, album of original songs.
