My approach to garment making is largely influenced by my childhood memory and experience. Growing up in the countryside in Nagano, Japan, I was surrounded by the beauty of nature, the changing of the four seasons and mingu, humble but beautiful and functional everyday tools. In the process of designing this collection, my first to present outside of Japan and in Paris, I stumbled upon an old catalogue of an exhibition“Choice, Tradition, Creation,”curated by Charlotte Perriand, in the mid 1940’s. Through her eyes, I was able to rediscover the beauty of mingu and remind myself to find beauty in the small things all around me.
Among them were the brown fallen leaves around my office and the mint green found in a book of receipts. These made up my colour palette for this collection. The colour of the stone stairway inspired velour jacquard. I sketched plants in the backyard and flowers decorating a local cafe into the floral prints. Tatami, a traditional flooring, and details found in various mingu such as baskets, strainers, and straws that must have inspired Perriand, all became knitted fabrics and coarsely woven textile.
I am honoured to be able to share what I learned from Perriand’s catalogue and the collection celebrates the beauty in daily life.

Thank you @sign_tokyo
