So, long before I was coming up with totally new Spider-Man variations (see SP//DR) for Marvel comics, I had what was probably the best job I ever had designing toys right before the band took off. I used to work for a company called FunHaus in Hoboken, and they would get a lot of work sent to them from ToyBiz, who was producing the line of Marvel toys at thew time. I don’t know if their design team was slammed or how many designers they had employed, but I was given the task of helping them figure out what to do with all of these left over Spider-Man dolls they had. They would tell us what they wanted, and then I would have to draw and design them. The one I was most proud of was the Safari Spider-Man. I think mainly because of his neck scarf, also referred to as a cravat, that I didn’t think they were going to go for. The large “gun” was supposed to be a viewfinder and you would see a scene inside the gun. I think I had wanted it to be a scene of Spider-Man wrestling with an alligator. I don’t remember if they ever went for that idea but I don’t think they did. I thought the whole thing was super silly. I also helped design some of their Spider-Man and Friends line, meant for young children, and remember getting frustrated when designing Daredevil because ToyBiz wasn’t going to go for the idea of blanking out his eyes, thinking it would be too scary for kids, so as I remember they wanted these bright blue eyes, and then I think they cancelled the figure entirely. So yeah, coolest job I ever had that I had to quit to get on the road. Pictured on the back are some of the other designs they did with the doll. I’m fairly certain I designed the Fireman, but I’m not sure about beach Spider-Man, though I seem to remember working on his flotation device. These are all pretty cheap on ebay. #spiderman #toybiz
