Today we're following stitch and embroidery artist @sally_hewett: 'Paula Rego’s paintings have a very unsettling quality. When you read the story behind the paintings of her husband and children the distress and anxiety caused by her husband’s illness are painfully obvious in the paintings. But there is a different, equally unsettling quality about the paintings which I think it’s impossible to put into words. In these little nipple pieces, using whitework techniques, I was experimenting with the idea of suggesting a mixture of associations and connotations. I made these for an exhibition being shown in a number of churches in and around Canterbury. I wanted this work both to fit with the ecclesiastical surroundings - I thought the white would suggest the idea of purity, white vestments, angels, altar cloths etc., - and at the same time suggest something physical, human and usually hidden – the nipple.' - Sally Hewett
