Jean Dunand, one of France’s leading decorative artists during the Art Deco era, was the first to introduce crushed eggshells as a decorative element. It soon became a speciality of his workshop.
.
His bold, geometric motifs of white eggshell against a pure black lacquered background became so popular that Dunand had to maintain a chicken coop in the courtyard of his workshop to help meet the demand.
.
Four unique Dunand vases are offered in our Design auction in New York. See them at our Rockefeller Center galleries until 19 June.
.
