Berthe Morisot had fellow Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir as a houseguest around the time she painted ‘Baigneuse’. Both artists were inspired by the theme of bathers, but Morisot’s little masterpiece has none of the fleshy sensuality of a Renoir work.

Instead, Morisot captured the unconscious grace of a girl deep in thought. Her exploration of light and reflection was decades ahead of Monet’s ‘Water Lilies’ – making this work an important milestone on the road to abstraction.
