Eid Mubarak! Today breaks the month long fast of Ramadan. Muslims across the globe will show gratitude to Allah, give alms to the poor, and celebrate with feasts, like the one seen here. This manuscript, probably created for a Muslim ruler in central northern India, is a splendid fusion of Islamic and indigenous Indian pictorial traditions. By dividing the page into horizontal rows, the artist adapted the vertical format typical of Islamic illustrations to suit the indigenous Indian preference for horizontal compositions.
