Photo by @ljohnphoto for @rippleeffectimages. Born in rural Myanmar, Kyawt Kyawt Ngwe, the oldest of 10 children, left school after 4th grade to help support her family. At age 16, she married against her parents wishes. The newlyweds scraped by on their own until their first baby arrived. Then the real struggles began. The family of four lived under a tarp in the corner of her mother-in-law’s yard for 10 years until they could save enough to buy land and build a humble stick structure. They now have a sturdier home thanks to the business training and support Kyawt received from PACT’s WORTH banking group. Kyawt is especially proud that they have a TV and electric cooking pot. Here, Kyawt Kyawt Ngwe reclines in the small building that used to be the family home. It now houses her pigs, with new litters arriving every four months. PACT training and the WORTH banking group allowed Kyawt to borrow money to diversify her income, which now includes broom making, and fresh eggs. She has become a village role model, creating success out of desperation.
