A Northern Elephant Seal emerges from winter surf, Farallon Islands, California / Photo by Kevin Schafer – @schaferpho @ナショナルジオグラフィック – Every wildlife photographer can probably remember a turning point in their lives, an event in nature that pointed them in the direction of a career that, although it could not promise great riches or fame, could offer a lifetime of discovery and connection with the wild character of this planet of ours. My pivot was more than thirty years ago, during a stint as seabird biologist on the Farallon Islands, a lonely cluster of rocks 30 miles west of the great city of San Francisco. I spent almost two years there, a life-altering experience that nudged me toward a path that would take me to every continent, and into the company of some extraordinary animals. Just one of these was this male Elephant Seal, hauling itself out of the foam of a winter storm. I took this image 35 years ago, on Kodachrome, with a camera that had no automatic anything. Technology has changed so much since then, but one thing has not changed - the magic of the Moment. #farallones #elephantseal #farallonislands
