The @khumbuclimbingcenter mission is to increase the safety margin of Nepali climbers and high altitude workers by encouraging responsible climbing practices in a supportive and community based program. ••• This vocational training program began in 2002 when @jenniloweanker and I were trekking in the Khumbu region. After a day of hiking we would seek out outcrops and ice falls to play around on. The Nepali staff of @wildnernesstravel would join in, having as much fun as we were. Jenni and I realized that the avocational aspect of mountaineering had a place in the Sherpa and Nepali culture. When we arrived in Phortse we shared the concept of vocational training in an avocational setting with @panurusherpa . We were onto something. ••• Classes take place each January over a three week period, when the ice is thick and students aren’t working on expeditions. Now in the 15th season the KCC has seen over 1000 graduates, six of which have gone onto earn full IFGMA guide certificates.
••• To provide the program with longevity and permanence we teamed up with @montanastateuniversity school of architecture to build a structure to house the program. The passive solar structure is earthquake resistant and will feature a @walltopia bouldering wall, a learning center with books & computers and a health clinic.
