Emotion is good. Outrage is good. Anger is good. If it’s directed correctly. Let’s direct it towards passing this referendum. I am a proud Irishman. Proud of our history. Proud of our people. Proud of a country that I consider attempts to promote forward thinking and inclusive ideals. Most of the time. But some of the invective, mistruths and outpouring of negative energy in this exhausting referendum campaign makes me deeply saddened. I believe that everybody is entitled to their views, until they begin to encroach upon others. I don’t force you, so you don’t force me. This referendum is about having the freedom of choice, it doesn’t force anything upon you specifically if you don’t want it. It’s about also about protection of the mother, medically and emotionally and providing support, as well as having certain important freedoms. Let’s stop muddying the issue with aggressively tangential arguments and mistruths. Ireland as a nation has fought for its freedom and rights, as has so many countries and people and minorities. We must continue to grow. This referendum is a part of that growth as a nation. Irrespective of the result on Friday I will still be a proud Irishman but if it doesn’t pass with a resounding Yes I will be hurt. Hurt because we will have allowed repression to chain us, and because influences that don’t understand or don’t really care about the rationale behind this referendum have won. Let’s not let this happen. Make sure you vote on Friday, and even if you disagree with it, don’t force your choices as a chain upon others. Instead see this referendum as a positive, a growth of communication, and of how people can begin to understand each other, tolerate other views and be more harmonious in our thinking. Then after this I hope that the outpouring of debate and conversation that has been prevalent in this debate can be harnessed towards other issues such as our environmental problems and sustainability, and deeper political discourse. There is no point promoting an argument over pro life or pro choice if you’re not already fighting for the correct world to sustain your views in. Vote YES. Let’s be a proud country and let’s use this energy
