By @randyolson | Europe leads the way with the Zero Waste movement—a concept the French have been pushing for 20 years. In France there are zero-waste stores that involve little to no packaging and save their customers 20 to 40 percent in overall cost. Communities all across Europe are rallying to do what they can to get rid of single-use-plastics. The main office for Zero Waste France is in the first photo. It houses Zero Waste France, which helps to coordinate efforts in smaller towns like Roubaix, locals weigh their landfill trash and input results into a citywide online database. Every week, they compete for the honor of contributing the least trash to the landfill (photo 2). This family has reduced their landfill waste to just one quarter of what it used to be. In Nantes, composting goes hand-in-hand with plastic recycling — keeping the plastic cleaner and keeping recycling and composting integral with the circular economy they are trying to create (photo 3). You also can order food online from Green Grocer in Nantes, and the grocers will package it in reused glass bottles and deliver it by bicycle messenger (photo 4). There is even a chain of zero-waste stores throughout France called “Day by Day” that use almost no packaging (photo 5). #PlanetorPlastic _________ These images are part of a multiyear effort to raise awareness about the global plastic waste crisis.
