A bay colt named Quip woke up in his stall at the back end of Keeneland racetrack in Lexington, Kentucky, at 3:30 a.m. on a Friday in mid-April. He began to dig into his daily breakfast: mixed oats, sweet oats and barley. 6 days earlier, Quip had finished 2nd in the Arkansas Derby. Afterward, he was slow to recover. He’d lost weight, enough that his trainer, 34-year-old Rodolphe Brisset, could notice at a glance. Quip was entered to run in the Kentucky Derby, but that was being reconsidered. That day, Rodolphe galloped Quip for the first time since he’d raced the weekend before. When Quip stepped onto the track, he didn’t buck — which, as an aggressive 3-year-old colt, he often did. And as the weekend progressed, Quip didn’t exhibit the energy his trainer wanted from him. After consultation with WinStar, Quip’s majority owner, Rodolphe withdrew the horse from the Kentucky Derby and instead pointed him toward the #Preakness, which take place this weekend. “My job is to get the horse to the race sound, fit, relaxed and ready to run,” Rodolphe said. “After that, it’s up to the horse and the jockey.” How do you prepare a horse for the @preaknessstakes?
