Farideh, 56, at home with her mother, Fatemeh. @mojganghanbari_ photographed them together in Tehran. “When I was a young girl,” Farideh told @mojganghanbari_, “women in my family didn’t have freedom to make a decision for continuing education or choosing a partner.” She doesn’t blame her mother; Farideh simply tried to make things easier for her daughter, who got an education, found a job and married her chosen man. @mojganghanbari_ has been exploring the relationship between #mothers and daughters in Iran. “I came to this realization that young women are influenced by their parents,” she told the #NYTLensBlog. And yet, she added, “I felt like there might be a border, there might be something like a wall we create at a certain age between ourselves and our parents.” That invisible barrier is a universal aspect of young adulthood. For many young Iranian women today, though, that gap is widened by several factors — the most obvious being the Islamic Revolution, which reversed decades’ worth of progress toward gender equality. @mojganghanbari_’s project, “The Wall,” explores that generational tension. But her goal was to highlight underlying similarities across cultures rather than apparent differences. Visit the link in our profile to see more on the #NYTLensBlog.
