Le 14 mai 1643, alors qu’il n’a que 4 ans, Louis XIV devient roi de France à la suite de la mort de son père Louis XIII. Ce portrait du peintre Hyacinthe Rigaud le représente ici à 63 ans, en costume de sacre, l’épée royale au côté, la main appuyée sur le sceptre. Le traitement raffiné des étoffes, la noblesse du décor et la solennité du souverain en costume fleurdelisé attestent de sa grandeur et de son pouvoir absolu. Commandé pour être offert au roi d’Espagne, Philippe V, ce portrait plut tellement à la cour qu’il resta en France ! ⚜️

On 14th May 1643, aged just 4, Louis XIV became king of France after the death of his father Louis XIII. This portrait by Hyacinthe Rigaud represents him at 63, wearing coronation robes, the royal sword at his sides and holding the royal scepter. The refined painting of the robes, the nobility of the antique setting, the royal fleur de lys and the solemnity of the monarch demonstrate his greatness and absolute power. Commissioned as a gift for Philip V of Spain, the portrait was such a success that it stayed in France! ⚜️
