Mary Cassatt painted this picture toward the end of her career, and she completed a number of studies and sketches before she arrived at her final composition. The figures, although posed asymmetrically, form a pyramid in the classical manner. The interplay of vertical and horizontal lines in the background maintains the symmetry.
