Photo by @Cory Richards // Captured #withGalaxy S9 using Pro Mode, produced with @samsungmobileusa // Spring in the western United States has a mood about it, often displaying every season in a single hour. It can swing from hot sun to snow in a matter of minutes, catching even the most seasoned locals off guard. Often, the last of the winter snows only disappear in late July or early August, replaced by afternoon thunderstorms and lightning, leading into the lengthening fire season. Fire season (historically defined as May through September in CO) has extended 78 days from the late 70’s due to climate change, making the moisture received during the winter and spring ever more vital. When forests like this burn, not only do they release CO2, but they can no longer absorb it. Forests are just one kind of carbon sink, and the more they disappear, the less CO2 in the atmosphere can be absorbed. Snowfall in Colorado this year was well below average meaning the summer is likely to be hotter and drier, resulting in bigger, hotter fires. So, while we all anxiously await warmer weather, it’s important to appreciate every drop of water we get.
