Murphy, 2017
In the interest of full disclosure, I do not have a dog.
A dear friend of mine challenged me recently.
How can you be doing this #yearofthedogs project when you don’t even have a dog ?
My retort is simple, I’ve photographed many animals such as Bears, Elephants, Tigers, Lions, Sheep and Pigs. Incredibly some of them were even kept as pets, yet I don’t have any of those either.
Maybe too much time away on assignments for National Geographic, maybe I never got over the death of my childhood dog or I’ve lived in too many weird apartment buildings, whatever the reason,
I am dogless.
Yet dogs are no strangers at our home. Our front porch famously graced the cover of a coffee-table book about porch dogs, complete with a photograph of a dog on our porch that did not live here.
I can say without hesitation, that if I did have a dog, I would be lucky to have one as cool as Murphy. A family dog who’s good with his paws and has just enough scruff to be considered authentic. He’s a venerable first-generation Labradoodle closing in on 14. A loyal and friendly sort with a firm pawshake, he needs no help opening or closing the front door of his home.
He’s welcome on our porch anytime.
There is something about each of these dogs that I admire and I enjoy sharing them with you.
Thank you all for your kind comments, messages and emails. I read them all and try to respond to each as best I can if you follow @vincentjmusi
