My first trip to Peru in 1981 revealed to me an unbelievable country of imagery. I don’t think I ever came to a place for the first time that I was so inspired to make photographs. This woman is weeping because of the death of several of her neighbors as the result of an earthquake that destroyed much of their village high in the Andes. Unable to reach the village by vehicle, I hitched a ride on a military helicopter that brought a medical team and a priest to the village to treat survivors. Ultimately I would return to Peru once again. It is a country that has had a profound effect on my personal and professional life.
