All four of my grandparents were Holocaust survivors. My mother’s parents were in a Russian labor camp and Auschwitz followed by a Latvian labor camp; my father’s in Bergen-Belsen and a Ukrainian labor camp. They were lucky to survive, but about half of my family, including my great-grandparents, great-uncles and great-aunts, and two aunts on my mother’s side, were killed. I found these vintage pictures of my grandparents and wanted to share them with you guys today on #holocaustremembranceday. Their strength defies logic - knowing what they went through and having the spirit to move on still stuns me - and they went on to have long, meaningful lives. I’m always amazed that an atrocity of this magnitude was able to continue until over 6 million people were murdered, and while it seems impossible that it could ever happen again, watching the news these days is a stark reminder that it’s not an impossibility. Wanted to take this opportunity to honor my family, those who survived and didn’t, and to remind ourselves to remain vigilant in the fight against hatred.
