Pale, light lager became American beer. ? Homebrewing provided the perfect counterpoint to homogenous mid-20th century American beer. Enthusiasts experimented, adapting hardware store equipment and repurposing supermarket ingredients to make better beer. In the 1970s Charlie Papazian, the “godfather” of American homebrewing, published a whimsical guide on the subject, founded the American Homebrewers Association, and inspired millions with his maxim, "Relax. Don't worry. Have a homebrew." ? This experimentation paved the way for America’s more than 6,000 craft breweries and 1.1 million homebrewers today.
