Debbie Modorow mushes through the wilderness outside her door in Cantwell, Alaska, just miles away from Denali National Park. The daughter of adventurous parents, Debbie spent an outdoors-centered childhood in New England. In 1979 Debbie traveled to Alaska for a short mountain climbing adventure, met her future husband Mark, and the rest is history. The Moderows began Salty dog kennel, named after their first sled dog Salt, and after Debbie’s children left for college she responded uniquely to empty nest syndrome by deciding to run the Iditarod. She is now an author of a memoir about her Iditarod experience, and continues to run and train her beloved sled dogs.
