For the last day of Women’s History Month, we are celebrating Rachel Feinstein.

Rachel Feinstein had her first solo exhibition in Los Angeles this past January at Gagosian Beverly Hills. While visiting Nymphenburg in 2000, Feinstein was inspired by the famous “commedia dell'arte” figurines and porcelain pedestals of rococo sculptor Franz Anton Bustelli. It occurred to her to produce scaled-up versions of the pedestals as garden seating, including the buckled period shoes relating to figures from the series. Thus, viewers can actually sit on the pearly white, shell-like forms, and attempt to slide their feet into the shoes to assume the place of the characters. At this scale, the pedestals become strangely erotic abstractions that suggest the body by virtue of its absence.
