En 1832, poussé par son attrait de l’Orient, Eugène Delacroix fait un voyage au Maroc et en Algérie. Il est autorisé à visiter le harem d’un corsaire turc à Alger, une vraie révélation pour le peintre qui engendrera ce chef-d’œuvre exposé au Salon de 1834. Renoir estimera d’ailleurs qu’« il n’y a pas de plus beau tableau au monde » !

In 1832, fascinated by the Far-East, Eugène Delacroix left France for Morocco and Algeria. He was granted his wish to enter a Muslim harem in Alger, a revelation for the painter that will result this masterpiece exposed at the Salon of 1834. Renoir would have said that there is no more beautiful painting in the world!
