The Polish painter Moïse Kisling studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in his native Kraków, where he met Josef Pankievicz, a fellow artist who was also a close friend of the French painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

After moving to Paris, Kisling rapidly became a central character in the capital’s arts scene, and his contact with the avant-garde movement there helped to develop his own modernist style.
